The Tony Quagliano International Poetry Award













This award honors Tony Quagliano’s contribution to the world of poetry, and recognizes an accomplished poet with an outstanding body of work. The poet must consistently strive for “cutting edge” and “avant-garde” innovation, which means experimental, innovative, “pushing the envelope” literature.

The biennial Tony Quagliano International Poetry Award is for $1,000.

Applications will be reviewed by a judge or panel of judges with credentials in the world of letters. Complete applications must be received by
December 1, 2017. (Electronic/digital entries only please.)

Selection of Poets
 
I. A writer may apply for this award by establishing the following eligibility. The Advisory Committee will carefully weigh the literary achievements in terms of the following criteria:

A. The poet must write in English.

B. The poet must have a body of work over a period of years.

C. To establish eligibility for the Tony Quagliano International Poetry Award
the poet, in the last five years, must submit proof of eligibility (pdf or jpg copies):

  • a.       Proof of publication (e.g., the title page or front cover of the book or magazine--pdfs or jpgs).
  • b.       Date of publication (e.g., the copyright page--pdf or jpg).
  • c.       Proof of authorship (e.g., the front cover of a novel or a book of poems, the table of contents page, the first page of a story or poem--pdfs or jpgs).
  • d.       Acknowledgment page (e.g., listing previous publications in literary magazines or anthologies--pdf or jpg).


  • A volume of 48 or more pages of poetry (pdf).

OR

  • 20 or more different poems or pages of poetry in five or more literary journals, anthologies or publications which regularly include poetry as a portion of their format (pdfs).
  • Up to 16 poems may be in a single volume of poetry of fewer than 48 pages. This volume, however, may count as only one of the required five places of publication.


D. Statement of preference: poems published in hard copy publications. Applicants may use online/electronic publications to establish up to 20 percent of their eligibility, provided that such publications have competitive selection processes and stated editorial policies (pdfs).


The following may not be used to establish eligibility:

  •  Self-publication including work that has appeared in a publication for which you   are the editor, publisher, or a member of a staff.
  •  Collaborative work.
  • Scholarly writing.
  • Instructional writing.
  • Journalism.
  • Book reviews.
  • Editorials/letters to the editor.
  • Interviews.
  • Student publications and publications which primarily print work by persons who are affiliated with a particular academic institution (including student presses).
  • Vanity press publication. For the purposes of this category, a vanity press is defined as one that does any of the following:
  • requires individual writers to pay for part or all of the publication costs;
  • asks writers to buy or sell copies of the publication;
  • publishes the work of anyone who subscribes to the publication or joins the organization through membership fees;
  • publishes the work of anyone who buys an advertisement in the publication; or
  • publishes work without competitive selection.


II.  The applicant will submit poetry manuscript materials for award consideration in a zipped file to include:

 A cover sheet with the poet's name, address, phone number and email address (pdf).


20 published or unpublished typescript or photocopied pages of poetry (single column/double or 1 1/2 spaced rows). The poet's name should not appear on any of these 20 pages (pdf).


And the materials listed above in I. establishing eligibility (pdfs or jpgs).
